Course Description

In this course, you will learn about building and using Intercultural Competence to help your business achieve Diversity and Inclusion goals. You’ll learn about features of Canadian workplace culture that you might not have noticed, even if you’ve lived in Canada your entire life. You’ll also learn the roots of intercultural conflict and how to manage it, engage diverse teams and handle performance reviews.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Describe intercultural competence and differentiate it from similar concepts

  • Identify how intercultural competence affects workplace efficacy and performance

  • Identify characteristics of Canadian workplace culture

  • Describe how perceptual differences, such as differing types of bias, can create intercultural conflict

  • Understand ethnocentrism and cultural relativism

  • Understand conscious and unconscious bias

  • Be aware of the risks of intercultural conflict at work

  • Activate skills for inclusion and resolving intercultural conflicts such as understanding integration and making accommodations for diverse employees

  • Interpret and address inappropriate non-verbal communication

  • Dialogue with employees through checking in and offering feedback on performance
