My name is Kate Glinnum and I’m a Communications and Publishing student at SFU. I started my co-op with Small Business BC back in January, eager to gain some hands-on experience. Over the course of my placement, I’ve had so many opportunities to learn, all while surrounded by an incredibly supportive and inspiring team.
As the Marketing and Communications Assistant, I mainly focused on editing and updating existing articles, along with creating original content. But, what made this experience really stand out is how it encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone and grow, both personally and professionally.
How I Ended Up at SBBC
For a while now, my goal after graduation has been to pursue a Master’s in Library and Information Studies to become a librarian. This path appeals to me not only because I love to read, write, and learn, but also because I’m very interested in working somewhere that promotes learning and supports the community.
I was drawn to this co-op position for similar reasons. Like libraries, SBBC is an essential resource dedicated to supporting, educating, and uplifting the community – just with a focus on small businesses. My experience connecting with entrepreneurs has shown me how significant of a role SBBC plays in helping them reach their goals.
Whether or not I ultimately become a librarian, this experience has cemented my desire to pursue a career where I can support others and has helped prepare me for my future in more ways than one.
What I’ve Learned
My Core Responsibilities
Throughout my co-op, I mainly worked alongside the content creation team, editing existing articles and writing original pieces. In general, I ensured content was in line with SBBC’s voice and writing style and optimized articles for SEO. For original pieces, I also got to come up with article ideas and find business owners to interview for profiles.
But, I got to take on a lot more outside of these core tasks. Whether it was event planning, web page development, or newsletter writing, I had many opportunities to broaden my skill set and learn about the different elements that come together to support SBBC’s mission.
Skills I’ve Gained
In terms of technical skills, I refined my abilities in editing, copywriting, and SEO. This helped me produce higher-quality content, sharpen my attention to detail, and communicate more clearly and engagingly. Working in the backend of the website also gave me insight into how to create a more accessible and user-friendly online presence.
I also developed my communication, collaboration, and active listening skills. These abilities not only ensured that tasks were completed effectively and efficiently, but also helped me work better with a team, contribute more meaningfully, and better understand others’ needs. They came in handy when, for example, I was pitching article ideas, and giving or receiving feedback. Overall, honing these skills boosted my confidence in connecting and collaborating with others, both in and out of the workplace.
Highlights
One of my favourite things about working here has been connecting with amazing small business owners across BC. Whether networking at meetups or interviewing them for articles, I’ve developed a newfound appreciation for the passion and grit that it takes to start a business. And, after editing over 150 articles on various business topics, I can’t imagine managing one myself.
The Impact of My Co-op Experience
Initially, grasping new platforms, meeting new people, and adapting to a new environment was very daunting. But, with the help of my kind and patient colleagues, I quickly found my rhythm.
This position encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone, which has helped me become more confident and reframed my perspective on new opportunities. What once seemed overwhelming, I now see as a challenge and opportunity to learn. This new mindset has been one of my most valuable takeaways and something that I’ll carry into all aspects of my life.
My time at SBBC has been profoundly positive and impactful, both personally and professionally. From the amazing workplace culture to the range of learning opportunities, I highly recommend you apply for their next co-op position!
