Pinyon Products

Victoria, Vancouver Island/Coast

Pinyon Products mission is to replace disposable items with reusable ones. We focus on creating products to help you live a more sustainable, and waste-free life. Pinyon was first established in 2002 and reestablished in 2017 with a new version of its Reusable Coffee Filters. Pinyon Products helps to replace disposable coffee filters with reusable ones, a small step in reducing our environmental impact. Our cloth Coffee Filters are made of 55% hemp & 45% Organic Cotton. Why hemp? Research has found hemp to be one of the best environmentally friendly crops grown. We found that the combined natural fibres of hemp and organic cotton to be the best suited for Reusable Cloth Coffee filters. One of the many qualities of the hemp fibre is its resilience to mold and mildew, that along with its strength and durability proved to provide a safe and sustainable option for disposable coffee filters. Pinyon Products are made right here in beautiful British Columbia, by my very own hands. We try our best to keep it all local, purchasing the fabric from a Canadian wholesaler, Cotton thread made in Canada and Tree free Packaging from BC. Pinyon Reusable Coffee Filters can be used 100s of times, 100s, saving the consumer money and the planet from the unnecessary waste and production of paper filters. After many brews the cloth coffee filter end of life is biodegradable, cut the filter into pieces and dispose of it in your household compost. Simple and natural, because natural fibres make a difference.

People's Choice

Why do you think you should win the Premier’s People’s Choice Award?

Having been born and live in BC does not give me the right to win an award But it does give me the bragging rights to rave about this truely amazing place. First, I have to mention the beauty in our Province, from the breath taking Gulf Islands to majestic mountains we have it All, coast lines, cattle country, vineyards, orchards, deserts, lakes, and Trees so many trees. With such a vast array of diverse natural surroundings comes the great responsibility to protect this place, my home. It's been important to me from a young age to be a steward of the land. Growing up in the Cariboo I saw first hand the devastation of the logging industry. My passion for the environment was further ignited when I had the opportunity to travel other countries and soon realized how fortuned I was to live in BC, Canada. Second, lets talk about the People, the many different ethnic groups living here brings BC to life. The culture, the food, the clothes, the languages, so many wonderful people generously sharing their stores creating a bond that unites us. I am an entrepreneur. I started working when I was young, babysitting to save money for crafts, making crafts to sell at Christmas fairs, setting up gift wrapping booths at Christmas, finding venues for others to set up booths, all this before I finished high school. It wasn't just about making money, it was about making things, meeting people, doing what I could to make things a little prettier. As a young adult I attended KPU furthering my ambition as a designer, it was there I founded my love for natural fabrics and my distaste for synthetics. The process and waste in which synthetics are produced is appalling. Sewing and working, working and sewing I found it difficult to start a fashion line in Natural Fabrics when the world seemed to want hi-tech fabrics. A few years past and I found myself a single parent of two amazing kids and more determined to continue. BC Small business has helped me in many ways already, with workshops, classes, small business programs, website, mentoring and small business loan to name a few. Decades later my vision hasn't changed much but my meaning of success has. Pursuing my passion for the past 4 decades to help house and feed my family while staying true to my values, that's success. Stumbling along the way has taught me many things, most of all there is no key to success, there is however many wonderful opportunities for those whom seek success, all one has to do is ask.
