Best Youth Entrepreneur

What motivated you to start your business and what is your vision for the future of the company?

When I did market research for my business plan in 2020, I knew I wanted to create a business which not only did no harm to people but also promoted health for future generations. This is because I am a mother of two boys, living through a pandemic caused in part by the rapid industrialization of our food systems. At the very same time I was looking for a suitable place, the former Eve Olive owner was looking for a new owner who would keep the restaurant 100% vegan and maintain the city's only dedicated gluten-free fryer. When I checked out the listing, I fell in love with the food and philosophy---support diversity and local products by carrying a selection of local wines, beers, and liquor. Eve Olive has become more than just a restaurant for dining, but also a community space that welcomes everyone. Last year we hosted Nanaimo's first drag brunch, and this year we plan to host art classes and other fun projects.

Why do you deserve to win the Best Youth Entrepreneur Award?

I believe that I deserve to win the Best Youth Entrepreneur Award for three reasons. First of all, I extended the business from a full-service restaurant to retail through the launching of Eve Olive’s house-made, feta-style vegan dip for sale in a local grocery store. Secondly, I increased sales through age-appropriate marketing, such as advertising in a magazine for seniors, who make up a large part of the Nanaimo population, and communicating with young people on social media. Last but not least, I took the initiative to join Island Good, which is part of the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance, so that I could continue to learn from and share experiences with local business owners. If I win the Best Youth Entrepreneur Award, my case may inspire other young people who are dreaming of a sustainable business for locals and the environment.

People's Choice

Why do you think you should win the Premier’s People’s Choice Award?

Eve Olive Restaurant is the only plant-based, family-run restaurant, with a dedicated gluten-free fryer, in Nanaimo, BC. It's also a gathering place for people who value diversity, equity and inclusion. Both our restaurant’s name, Eve Olive, and the extended olive branches in our logo suggest a peaceful evening place for everyone. While many vegan restaurants and other small businesses closed during the pandemic, Eve Olive survived, thanks to local support. What's more, we were awarded 'Best of the City' for the last two years. Under the pressure of high inflation, we tried hard to manage costs in order to keep our prices reasonable and give our customers a comfortable dining experience. In today's difficult economic conditions, we have strived to maintain employment by increasing our business hours and redistributing work hours. Winning the Premier’s People’s Choice Award would encourage our team to keep developing the business and thereby continue protecting animals while promoting the health of people and our planet.
