Best Solopreneur

What motivated you to start your business? What challenges did you overcome as a Solopreneur?

I started my own business because, as the mother of a child with disabilities, being self-employed was my best option. I became an organizer because my friends suggested that I'd be good at it - and I am! I love helping people to make good decisions about their possessions, and to simplify their lives and their surroundings. When I started, no one had ever heard of professional organizing, so I had to do a lot of educating too, about what professional organizers do, and our worth. It was difficult for the first five years or so, having an irregular income stream, but we made it work. Business in Victoria is very driven by word of mouth, so the more happy customers I had, the more business came my way. Also, because the profession was relatively new, there were very few professional organizers on the Island. If I wanted peer support, advice, or education, I had to go to Vancouver or Toronto! Although I knew instinctively how to help others get organized, I had a lot to learn about running a business. I am grateful for the services offered by Business Victoria, where I learned how to keep books, do marketing, collect and submit taxes, and truly present myself as a professional. It took a lot longer for me to learn about setting boundaries - not taking every client who came along, regardless of fit, not doing things outside my scope of work because I was afraid to say no, and not working all hours!

Why do you deserve to win the Best Solopreneur award?

I have worked hard to keep my business afloat through the pandemic, and to continue to provide my clients with the support they need. I have encouraged other solopreneur professional organizers too, providing advice, contract work, and sometimes client referrals and I continue to mentor new organizers. I have used my sudden abundance of free time to volunteer for my professional association, revising their governance documents and providing advice to the board of directors. I was presented with my industry's Ambassador Award for service to the community, have been a finalist for the prestigious Harold Taylor (Founder's) Award for lifetime achievement, and am one of only four recipients of Professional Organizers in Canada's President's Award for outstanding contribution to the industry. I did all of this while supporting myself, putting my son through university, and providing moral, emotional, and practical support to my daughter. I firmly believe that we will survive this pandemic and come out stronger if we help and support each other to the best of our abilities.
