What motivated you to start your business and what core cause do you support?

I’m not sure what prompted me to open a bakery; perhaps it was a call of nature. My last name translates as “Bready” in Georgian and my mother’s last name translates as “Miller.” My decision to become a vegetarian in 1980 is where it all began. This was tough in the beginning, and I began experimenting by creating treats for myself. I’ve learnt to source my energy from super foods and developed a palate for a wholesome diet Thus, unknowingly, I was starting my future career, which is now GluteNull. When I first arrived in Canada in 1996, I had to learn a lot of new things, including how to cross the street! I taught math at Sukhumi University in my hometown. My educational papers were submitted to the Canadian Evaluation Board but were delayed until the year 2000. By this time, I had already started my bakery business and didn’t want to give it up. When I first started my bakery, I didn’t know anything about the business. Within the first eight years, two articles were written about my Georgian baguette, one featured in Vancouver magazine. I will never forget Mia Stainsby’s passionate article; she made me believe in myself. In 2009, a customer asked me to make bread for his gluten-intolerant child. I love a challenge, and so I started experimenting. We introduced Buckwheat Bread, which in the beginning looked and tasted more like clay than bread, but eventually we came up with the product that’s available today and I’m very proud of it. Although the emphasis of GluteNull is on gluten free and vegan production, it is so much more than that and at the same time, so much simpler. It is just ‘good food’ – natural, nourishing, ethical and delicious. Our core cause is our slogan - "Food and Lifestyle". We do our best to leave as little impact as possible on mother earth, sourcing only plant based, non-GMO and when possible organic and local ingredients, while living a healthy, compassionate lifestyle both with body and mind. The bakery runs by the Golden Rule of 'What you do not wish upon yourself, extend not to others'. Thus, Glutenull uses only the finest ingredients from local organic growers and what is sold to the consumers is also on the kitchen table of their families and friends. We believe that healthy and delicious food should be available to everyone, including people with allergies, diet restrictions and intolerances.

Glutenull has innovated more than 25 products in BC and our business has grown across Canada and now the US . Nevertheless, we are still strongest in our home province where we have our community roots and the most recognition, love and support. We believe that Glutenull’s efforts in working with organic, non-GMO and local farmers and producers, can contribute to British Columbia’s growth in the organic, non-GMO, local and plant based food market. We believe that small companies like ourselves are often the backbones for spreading awareness and upholding strong values that foster sustainable communities. We hope that by increasing our demand and production, we also in turn increase the demand for similar products and standards. We see it already with large corporations like Nestle and Nature's Path that are releasing products similar to ours while, emphasising on their labels that they are plant based, Palm oil free, no preservatives or additives etc etc. We've shown that it can be done and that others should follow suit. Visitors who come to British Columbia from all over the world, write us asking if we can make our product available in their country or region. The realisation for what the future of food can look like - healthy, sustainable, high quality and delicious - is pioneered in our province. BC is becoming one of the most diverse places for food, and people no longer feel restricted due to their allergies, illnesses, habits or beliefs. We are proud that BC is the leader in Canada and the world for plant based revolution and we are happy support it with the right fuel.

What motivated you to start your business, what challenges did you overcome?

Our founder has innovated more than 25 products for Glutenull. All products are top 10 allergen free, as they do not contain eggs, dairy, wheat/gluten, soy and other common allergens. Glutenull is a vegan, gluten free certified and non-GMO verified bakery. We also have Paleo and Keto products that are low carb and diabetic friendly. For many our products solve the problem of having healthy options while living with dietary constraints due to allergies, diseases and/or lifestyle choices. As an example in the Testimonial attached from our customer our products have improved the quality of life of a diabetes survivor. Instead of 6 insulin shots, she is able to take only 1 a day by following a strict diet. Diet is often linked to health and quality of life for those living under strict dietary restrictions such as diabetes, celiac disease, severe allergies and intolerances. Our close relationship with our customers is the key to helping us come up with new inventions. Our customers contact us to tell about their health issue and needs. Our businesses started - when Otari was approached by a father that was looking for a Gluten Free bread for his daughter and how it is continues now. Our customers are always at the heart of the invention. In addition, we are always sourcing cleaner, better, organic ingredients and we don’t compromise on quality, even if that means lower margins. That’s what sets us apart. The problems we face is not using conventional baking ingredients, binders and preservatives like eggs, wheat, different food grade glycerin and etc. We never use any preservatives, additives, palm oil or ingredients we consider unethical. I.e., we create our own Almond Butter in house from premium whole almonds to ensure its integrity and our own Keto Dark Chocolate to use for our Keto Products. Our most recent invention, our Keto breads which contains only 2g net carbs per 85g bun and our Lemon Keto cookies have less than 1 carb per cookie. The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, moderate-protein, low-carb diet that can induce weight loss and improvement in glycemic control. It works but it can be an unhealthy route if you are consuming only saturated fats. Evidence suggests that high fat, low carb diets that focus on animal foods may lead to poor health outcomes, while diets that emphasize vegetable sources of fats and proteins provide benefits (Source: https://bit.ly/3t7jqFR). As our Keto diets are completely plant based, we offer the healthiest and safest way.

When visitors come to BC and find our products, we receive emails asking whether we can export our product to their country as they cannot find something similar in their countries. We believe Glutenull products are unique in all of the world and our innovations are here to better people's diets, health and ultimately their lives. 2.) We love Mother Earth - Furthermore, by creating plant based products and increasing vegan diet popularity and accessibility, we are also joining the fight against climate change.
