What motivated you to start your business and what core cause do you support?
Our founder is both a green and a social entrepreneur who is very passionate about environmental protection and preservation. He saw an opportunity to limit the waste of scarce natural resources like lithium and also limit pollution. The waste occurs when people whose phone or device battery is low; purchase power banks because it’s often more convenient than taking around their charger. Knowing that our mobile devices are essential to daily life, we created ElectricGo, Canada’s first device charging service. What motivated you to start your business, what challenges did you overcome?
Our founder saw an opportunity to limit the waste of finite lithium resources and limit pollution. The waste occurs when people whose phone or device battery is low purchase power banks because it’s often more convenient than taking around their charger. Our entire life is on our mobile devices, so ElectricGo was created, Canada’s first device charging service. ElectricGo gives people the option to rent a power bank if they still need to use their device that is low on battery life. Funding was a barrier to starting our business; however, we used innovation to obliterate most of our costs. Rather than building our own network of outlets, we decided to look for partners in prime locations to partner with us. Finding partners was another challenge we encountered, forcing us to innovate once more. We also wanted our customers to know where our locations were and have a seamless none interactive purchase process. Innovation also solved this problem. We incentivized hosting our units selling the benefits to businesses. In return for hosting us, we featured the host partner’s establishment on our ElectricGo app map free, and we would increase their count of walk-ins (potential and actual customers). Customers already at the location would stay longer and spend more not having to worry about a dying battery. Staff would not have the distraction of customer’s phones to monitor, and business owners would not have to worry about liability in case of device loss or damage. Finally, we share the revenue earned with our host partner. The ElectricGo app solved both the problem of customers finding our locations and customers making payments seamlessly without interface with a person. The App also helps us keep costs down.
Why do you deserve to win the Best Innovation award?
Innovation is what we do at ElectricGo. We employ creative thinking to establish our business, structure our business model, overcome challenges and grow. Innovations allowed us to help solve lithium depletion, waste, and pollution problems while providing an option to customers who needed to charge their mobile devices. Innovations allowed us to establish and grow convenient locations by partnering with hosts to cut costs. It allowed us to incentivize our host partners to make hosting our product very attractive. We continue to innovate to find creative ways to achieve further growth and success in this very challenging business climate during a pandemic.

Many times people want to do the right thing, but they are unable to. If they had an option that would not result in severe inconvenience, they would take that option. Once people learn of the negative impacts of purchasing a power bank, they immediately want to know what other options they have. Taking a charger along is no guarantee that you will be able to charge their device while away from home. Once people become aware of our service, they instantly like that there are so many advantages. Their conscience is clear that they are not hurting mother nature when they participate in the sharing economy, they love the convenience, and many times we help them discover a great hangout spot.
