Bigfoot Donuts is a locally owned and operated business, brought about from a vision of creating an exciting community oriented gathering place built around a re-imagined childhood favourite, the humble donut. We are driven by a love of our community, a love of business, and, of course, a love of donuts and coffee. Everything we make is handcrafted, made from scratch, and done with a focus on quality over quantity. We embrace community and fun with our ever changing menu and seasonal specials, festive events, and interactive social media. Come have some fun and enjoy. See you soon!

What motivated you to start your business and what core cause do you support?
We found ourselves feeling unfulfilled and needing to make a change in our lives. We knew that starting a business would give us the direction, positive mental health, and feeling of fulfillment we so needed. Our family has owned small businesses in the Comox Valley since 1920... so it was really only a matter of time before we found our own entrepreneurial calling. Once we knew entrepreneurship was our future, it didn’t take long to figure out what kind of business we should have. We LOVE donuts! We visited so many donut shops on road trips throughout the Pacific Northwest that it became clear that this was what our business should be. We wanted to bring quality, handcrafted, made from scratch donuts to the Comox Valley. We also wanted to create an inclusive and welcoming space that people of all walks of life could come together over a common interest, great coffee and donuts! A place for interaction, for fun, for making memories. We want to give our community what they’ve given us: happiness. Our core cause is our community; and making a positive impact in the daily lives of our guests, by encouraging positive mental health, and motivating others to follow their dreams.
Why do you deserve to win the Best Community Impact award?
We are continually blown away by the power a simple comfort, coffee and donuts, has in affecting positive impact into our community. We put a lot of heart into what we do. It’s always been our goal to serve our community in a meaningful way, and we believe we are achieving this in all the ways mentioned. Earning this would be a recognition of us realizing that goal.

What motivated you to start your business and what is your vision for the future of your company?
We are a husband and wife team, that started this business as a way to create a more fulfilling future for ourselves. We left stable corporate type careers that we’d worked hard through higher education to obtain, but weren’t making us happy. We started Bigfoot Donuts at age 26 and in just 4 years have grown our business into a thriving community hot spot, in spite of the high failure rate in our industry, and of course, one quarter of our duration through a global pandemic! The idea for Bigfoot Donuts came about from a life-long love of baking and an admiration for the many great entrepreneurs around us. Our family has owned businesses in the Comox Valley since 1920... so it was really only a matter of time before we found our own calling. And it just so happens we LOVE donuts! We visited so many donut shops on road trips throughout the Pacific Northwest that it became clear that this was what our business should be. We wanted to bring quality, handcrafted, made from scratch donuts to the Comox Valley. We also wanted to create a space that was a reminder of fond childhood memories of the old Courtenay Bakery - an awesome community gathering place with quality product people will want to come for, and we are happy to say that people do come for them, sometimes from far away! In our just under 4 years open we’ve managed to increase the number of people we employ, the products we make, and sales figures, year over year. We plan to expand our bakery to produce a greater range of offerings, and to meet demand of our current store before embarking on an expansion plan outside of our flagship operation. We get requests weekly from other cities requesting us to come there. However, our product quality, exclusivity and branding is an asset and sets us apart from other bakeries and coffee shops in our area, and we don’t want to expand in a way that isn’t sustainable and will take us away from our motto - handcrafted, made from scratch, and quality over quantity. The best was for us to expand is by utilizing our current bakery to produce for other locations within transport distance. A kiosk style method of expansion will be our optimal direction and is our goal for the future.
Why do you deserve to win the Best Youth Entrepreneur award?
We dove deep into the entrepreneurial journey, and have built a business from the ground up in every way making it our own with our own hands. From the logo, to the countertops, the photography, the recipes, the interior design, you name it, we did it and still do it. We wanted our space to feel like our space, so we made it all ourselves. And we want our guests to know who we are and know who they’re supporting every time the come in. We are Lynds and Jay, your local donut duo. Just a couple of donut loving, hardworking, small business owners, that are already so thankful just for the nomination.
