BC Hydro generates most of our province’s electricity, 98 percent of which is clean energy. When drivers make the switch to electric vehicles, they aren’t just cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions, they’re also investing in a greener way of life. In this article, learn about some incentives available to ease the transition to electric vehicles.
The Role of Plug In BC
Plug In BC is a program of the Fraser Basin Council that works to accelerate electric vehicle (EV) use and the adoption of related charging infrastructure in British Columbia. The program collaborates with the government, industry, academic institutions, EV owners, NGOs, and utilities to ramp up the adoption of electrification in BC.
Incentives to Switch to Electric Vehicles
There are currently two incentive programs available to drivers in BC to reduce the cost of purchasing an electric vehicle:
1. Federal iZEV program
Managed by Transport Canada, this program offers point-of-sale incentives for qualifying fully battery-electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. You can receive up to $5,000 off the purchase price of a new battery electric vehicle, plug-in hybrid (depending on its range), or hydrogen fuel cell vehicle.
For more information, explore the Government of Canada’s incentives for Zero-emission vehicles.
2. Provincial Go Electric Passenger Vehicle Rebate
Go Electric helps BC meet our emission goals by shifting to cleaner transportation. The program makes it easier for people and businesses to purchase and own electric vehicles by:
- Lowering the price of EVs
- Making it easier to charge or fuel EVs
- Supporting research, job training, and economic development in the province’s EV sector
Rebate amounts vary based on your income and the type of vehicle you’re looking to purchase. Check out Go Electric’s Passenger EV Rebates page for more information.
