If you’re looking for cute cookies, macarons, and not-too-sweet cakes, then you’re in the right place! My Love At First Bite Bakery is run by Chantel Vo, a Vietnamese-Chinese baker who specializes in making cute character macarons and custom whipped cream cakes. She recently opened up a storefront in Vancouver that is currently open by appointment only. Fun fact: The logo for the bakery is inspired by a Shiba Inu macaron- the item that kickstarted the business!

Best Youth Entrepreneur

What motivated you to start your business and what is your vision for the future of the company?

Growing up, Chantel always loved baking and helping her mom in the kitchen. She would bake in all her spare time and gave out pastries to friends and family. In 2018, Chantel entered a provincial-wide baking competition called SkillsBC and received third place, without having any formal training. Afterwards, she decided to take the career seriously and enrolled in the VCC Youth Train in Trades Baking program right after graduating from high school. Then, the pandemic hit. During this time, she was able to focus more time on baking and tried her hand at making macarons again for the first time in years. Chantel ended up making shiba inu macarons and posted a photo of them online. The macarons were a hit and it motivated her to officially incorporate the business in 2021! She began with renting a space at a commercial kitchen, but now, My Love At First Bite has a storefront that operates by appointment only. For the future, Chantel will continue to introduce even more flavours from her childhood to share with the community. She also hopes to participate in more pop-up events and open the bakery for walk-in customers. Another goal is to have other merchandise like tote bags, aprons, and plushies inspired by the macaron designs to share the love with more people who don't live here and create a website to streamline the ordering process.

Why do you deserve to win the Best Youth Entrepreneur Award?

Chantel is currently 22 years old and is the only employee at My Love At First Bite Bakery. There are a lot of tough, late nights, as she handles all the tasks from taxes to baking, but what makes it all worth it, is the excitement from customers seeing their pastries for the first time and the messages from the customers expressing their joy after eating the desserts! Chantel hopes to be an inspiration for people to pursue a career that makes them happy, as she also had to really convince her parents to let her open a bakery. She also receives messages from other young people around the world wanting to open their own bakery, asking for advice. On her page online, Chantel shares recipes for people to try at home and is always open to exchanging tips with other small businesses and gives back where she can.

People's Choice

Why do you think you should win the Premier’s People’s Choice Award?

My Love At First Bite Bakery exists to bring your dream cake and macaron designs to life! Chantel works one on one with clients to bake the perfect creation that is adorable, tasty, and not too sweet! (Mom approved!) My Love At First Bite's cakes are inspired by the ones that Chantel grew up eating at every birthday party. They were from Asian bakeries, made of fluffy chiffon cake and lightly sweetened whipped cream. She wanted to keep the taste she remembered from her childhood, but decorate them in cute designs and incorporate flavours from her culture that she didn't often see. For customers that have similar upbringings, My Love At First Bite hopes to spark nostalgia and for others, to inspire them to try something new. Often, Chantel also does bake sales with a portion of the proceeds being donated to local organizations.
