4 Generations Creations

Kamloops, Thompson-Okanagan

Weytk (hello), my name is Ashley Michel and I am the owner and artist of 4 Generations Creations. I am a mother, full-time Bachelor of Education student, self-taught seamstress, artist, & designer. 4 Generations Creations is an Indigenous 1-Woman run business that aims to educate others about Indigenous issues & resiliency through art. Driven by my passion for our culture and language, I pride myself in creating Indigenous designs that unapologetically take up space in this colonized world.

Business Impact Award

What motivated you to start your business? Why are you passionate about what you do?

Reconnecting back to our Secwepemc culture and language is what motivated me to start my business - especially after having my daughter. It is a huge part of our Indigenous identity. Growing up, there was not much authentic representation anywhere. I wanted to be apart of that change, not only for my daughter, but for other Indigenous children across turtle island so they too, could take pride and have a positive sense of self-identity. I also believe there was space for me to promote a positive message for our Indigenous community. We are more than our history. We are still here, we are resilient, and we are strong!

Why do you deserve to win the Business Impact award?

4 Generations Creations deserves to win the Business Impact award because of its undeniable passion for revitalization of culture and language within the Indigenous/Secwepemc community, as well as the impact behind educating others on Indigenous issues and resiliency in a positive way. As a small business, 4 Generations has given back to the community in many ways such as sharing knowledge (Ribbon skirts, regalia, smudging, etc), educating others (land acknowledgements, land back, Residential School, Indian Act, Every Child Matters, birth alerts, foster care, etc.), and raising funds for many Indigenous organizations that share the same values. As an Indigenous 1-woman run business, Ashley (Owner of 4 Generations Creations), is a true role model and has overcome many obstacles throughout Covid. She has demonstrated true resiliency in taking up space and in doing so, has encouraged other Indigenous artists/businesses to do the same. Starting this business as a single mother from her kitchen table, she has truly accomplished all her successes on her own with no support. Therefore, winning this award would make a huge difference. 4 Generations Creations would be a great ambassador and represent the Small Business Impact Award with honour, pride, respect, and resiliency for her community, allies, daughter, and Indigenous children across Turtle Island.
