Best Community Impact

What motivated you to start your business and what core cause do you support?

Imagine if you had the choice... to eat produce grown in another country, trucked in from miles away and already days old when it gets to your plate. Or to eat produce picked fresh & ripe this morning just a few blocks away. Which would you rather eat? It’s a no-brainer, right? The astonishing distances and massive distribution system that food typically goes through before it reaches us is astounding. A large majority of produce consumed in Victoria travels great distances, taking days – and sometimes weeks – to reach our plate. By then it’s lost most of its taste, aroma, texture and nutrients. There is a better way – grow food where people live. TOPSOIL was founded by Chris Hildreth in 2015 to create an innovative approach to food production and to help cultivate a thriving local food system in Victoria – one that values environmental sustainability, transparency, and the local economy. Urban agriculture is an exciting opportunity to provide food that is better for us, better for the environment, and just simply tastes better. For TOPSOIL, that’s what the eat local movement is all about.

What motivated you to start your business and what is your vision for the future of your company?

TOPSOIL was founded to create a tangible alternative to the industrial food system. We are creating a food production business that can scale and that has positive benefits associated with every aspect from start to finish. Therefore, our business was built on five guiding principles. 1) Provide chefs and community with high quality fresh local produce while creating economic, social and environmental benefits for the building developer and surround community. 2) Minimize CO2 emissions associated with food transportation. 3) Use zero chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. 4) Eliminate one-time-use plastic packaging. 5) Transparency – grow food in-sight in-mind and provide the city with the opportunity to know exactly who, how and where their food is coming from. Over the past 5 years TOPSOIL has worked tirelessly to successfully prove that our modular farming system can be environmentally and socially responsible while being economically viable. We have streamlined the production and distribution systems to allow our farm to grow 10's of thousands of pounds of high quality fresh local produce for over 25 restaurants and 100's of community members all with our 5 guiding principles intact. Our 5 year vision is to Increase local food production in any community by providing a fully integrated modular farming system which will empower people through education, production and employment. Our fully integrated TOPSOIL farming system will give any individual, organization or community the best chance of implementing and running a successful farm. The farm kit will allow people to learn how to grow large amounts of fresh local produce in a sustainably and financially viable way and will empower people to grow food for their community. With the right systems, tools and support we can empower people to grow food for their community.

Why do you deserve to win the Best Youth Entrepreneur award?

We believe we deserve to be considered for this award because we fundamentally built our business around social and environmental principles. Entrepreneurship becomes exponentially harder when decisions are based around social and environmental principles and not solely around the bottom line. We want to show the next generation of entrepreneurs that you can make a positive impact in your community while creating a financial viable business.
