Best Immigrant Entrepreneur

Please tell us your personal story and about your business. How you started, and how you have overcome challenges.

I am the Founder & CEO of ThyForLife, an award-winning mobile platform helping people thrive every day despite having a thyroid condition. Inspired by my own experience of surviving thyroid cancer and living through the pain of trying to keep track of my own health data, I am passionate about providing a solution and peace of mind to the more than 400m people around the world who currently suffer from a thyroid condition. After struggling to keep track of numerous daily medications and monthly blood test results, I decided to create an app to help thyroid patients have all of this information at their fingertips. Prior to founding ThyForLife, I was a manager at Bain & Co, a leading strategy consulting firm, and led a successful career at the World Bank and European Bank. I’m also a 3x entrepreneur. While still in school, at the age of 14, I founded an English language school Natlen House in Ukraine that has been serving more than 100 students annually for the past 20 years. Since, I have traveled to 70+ countries and lived ‘permanently’ in 8 gaining significant market experience in North America, Western Europe, the CIS and South-East Asia. With a clear passion for travel, I launched my second entrepreneurial endeavor in 2017, UkraineCultureTrip.com. The boutique travel business became Ukraine's fastest growing travel company with 10x year-over-year revenue growth prior to COVID-19. Seeing the market shift due to the global pandemic, I refocused my energy and passions into the launch of my third company, ThyForLife in 2020. I was simultaneously also becoming a first time mother and welcomed my daughter into this world around the same time as launching ThyForLife. Now, as a female founder, I am facing the challenging reality of having to raise capital. With only ~3% of VC funding going to female founders, it is not an easy path. Many investors are questioning my ability to manage my company myself and are asking me to bring on a co-founder. I believe I am fully capable of running this business myself and see investors trying to fit me into an established pattern they’re used to seeing. Thankfully, I have already overcome the first hurdle with the initial external check signed and we’re on track to raise more. I hold an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, US and am based in Vancouver, Canada.

Why do you deserve to win the Best Immigrant Entrepreneur award?

This award is about much more than me as what I have achieved thus far wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication and hard work of all of my team members, advisors, investors, and cheerleaders in the community. I’d be incredibly thankful for this recognition because our team has worked incredibly hard this year to bring our product to life for millions of thyroid patients globally. We recognize that launching a mobile health tech company is no easy feat, and our journey thus far has already been faced with a myriad of challenges. Winning this award will help our team feel both recognized and further motivated to continue to push onward in pursuit of our mission and goal. As an immigrant and female founder that has moved countries 8 times, I have developed the grit to integrate and accommodate. I recognize the self-constructed societal borders that exist in our world today, and I sincerely wish for equity, equal opportunity to flourish, and inclusivity, no matter the background, for the generations to come. Winning this award would prove to my team, to my daughter, to fellow female entrepreneurs, to fellow immigrants, and to fellow cancer-survivors that you don’t have to fit a singular mold to be successful. With resilience, perseverance, passion, and a dream, it is possible to move through uncertainty and define the path to success on your own terms.

Best Youth Entrepreneur

What motivated you to start your business and what is your vision for the future of your company?

I am the Founder & CEO of ThyForLife, an award-winning mobile platform helping people thrive every day despite having a thyroid condition. Inspired by my own experience of surviving thyroid cancer and living through the pain of trying to keep track of my own health data, I am passionate about providing a solution and peace of mind to the more than 400m people around the world who currently suffer from a thyroid condition. After struggling to keep track of numerous daily medications and monthly blood test results, I decided to create an app to help thyroid patients have all of this information at their fingertips. I am thrilled that in early Q2 2021 ThyForLife will be releasing an upgraded version of our mobile app on Android and launching on iOS! Designed to help the more than 400M people worldwide with a thyroid condition (1 in 8 women) efficiently manage and optimize their health, ThyForLife enables users to track, store, visualize, and assess their thyroid condition in one intuitive and streamlined location. With already nearly 1000 daily active users engaging since our beta launch on Google Play last May, I am really excited to see what was just an idea a year ago (initially created to help me personally cope with surviving thyroid cancer), become a real life product that has the power to impact the millions of people worldwide who are in my same shoes. I look forward to the day when the industry provides standardized access to electronic medical records and finally shifts away from legacy technology to flexible plug and play mobile solutions that integrate seamlessly across physician and patient platforms. It’s past time patients are empowered by having easy access to their own health information and full end-to-end records available at their fingertips.

Why do you deserve to win the Best Youth Entrepreneur award?

Being a “Youth Entrepreneur” couldn’t have been possible had my parents not instilled incredible grit in me from an early age and have themselves demonstrated what it’s like to be a successful business owner, parent, family member, friend and community leader. With my parents providing a safety net, while still in school, at the age of 14, I founded an English language school Natlen House in Ukraine that has been serving more than 100 students annually for the past 20 years. My older sister took on the management of the school and has been teaching kids as well while I went on to explore the world. Since, I have traveled to 70+ countries and lived ‘permanently’ in 8 gaining significant market experience in North America, Western Europe, the CIS and South-East Asia. Every new school, new country, new experience has slowly but confidently shaped my outlook that anything is possible if only one can dream it. I have become somewhat addicted to creating, building, working for the result, and looking back, I am not at all surprised that I launched a global business to address a massive pain point that I personally face. It hasn’t been easy. Not to mention that I am a female founder, immigrant, mother, and cancer-survivor. All this aside, I have still managed to find incredible success in building a solution that is posed to impact millions of people around the world, and I am grateful to my parents every single day for encouraging me to reach for the stars and not to take no for an answer.
