Why do you deserve to win the Best Community Impact award?

My name is Tricia Thomas, and my traditional name is Laxelewetstnaat. I am Coast Salish, a member of Halalt First Nation in Hul’qumi’num territory on Vancouver Island, BC. As a photographer and videographer, I use my business and my gifts as a force for community good, empowering members, working with the Nation’s leaders, Elders and knowledge keepers to strengthen culture and language. I believe that my work represents Indigenous people in a positive light, in a way that honours and empowers our people to have a voice – not only within the community but in the world. I am also passionate about assisting others in maximizing their own self-reliance and self-sufficiency through the work I do. As an entrepreneur, I believe the opportunities and possibilities are endless. Salish Eye Productions has impacted the community by: • helping to improve the standard of living [for myself and others] • strengthening our identity as First Nations people by removing barriers and reaching out • bringing awareness to the outside community through sharing our stories • striving for positive change through social innovation • encouraging entrepreneurship • investing in community projects • providing financial supports to local activities • creating employment opportunities for myself and for others

I am Tricia Thomas, and my traditional name is Laxelewetstnaat. I am Coast Salish, a member of Halalt First Nation in Hul’qumi’num territory on Vancouver Island, BC. I own and operate a media and communications company called Salish Eye Productions, which was formed in 2014 with the intent to promote positive change for Indigenous people and to build cross-cultural relationships, through photo, video, and design. My company is guided by traditional values: courage, wisdom, humility, and respect. I am also studying for my MBA in Sustainable Innovation because I want to help lead the way into a new economic future for my People and for everyone. I believe we are at the beginning of a growing wave of awareness, of not only environmental stewardship but also economic social responsibility. My hope is that this is a new era of consciousness founded on a global perspective of wealth, where all people have what they need and are empowered to use their gifts. My dream is that our children will thrive in a new paradigm of respectful collaboration between all races and Nations.
