Best Community Impact
What motivated you to start your business and what core cause do you support?
I’m someone that’s always loved clothing and fashion and was actually an ignorant fast fashion consumer until a few years ago. However, when I learned the dirty secrets behind the fashion industry such as the harmful materials that go into our clothing, the unethical treatment of garment workers, mass overconsumption of clothing, and the amount of textile waste we send to our landfills to rot for centuries — I knew I had to do something to turn things around. We cannot keep making, consuming, and throwing away clothing as we have been for centuries. It's not sustainable and change is necessary. Therefore, I created Recloseted, a sustainable fashion consulting agency dedicated to righting the harmful fashion industry by working with fashion companies and clothing consumers. I believe that by helping to create better clothing choices and educating consumers, the much-needed change will happen.

What motivated you to start your business and what is your vision for the future of your company?
I am on a mission to right the harmful fashion industry with my company, Recloseted. My vision is a fashion industry where harmful materials are no longer used, garment workers are treated ethically and fairly, and we do not send millions of tonnes of textile waste to rot in our landfills for centuries. I hope that with Recloseted, I can contribute to transforming the fashion industry from a harmful linear economy to a regenerative circular economy. Growing up in Vancouver, I am someone that has a deep appreciation for the outdoors (I love to hike in the summer and snowboard in the winter). On the other hand, I also love the fashion industry and the creativity that goes into the industry. A few years ago, I watched The True Cost, a documentary on the fashion industry. The film opened my eyes to the dirty secrets of the garment industry. I felt so ignorant, guilty, and compelled to do something about it. Upon further research through books, podcasts, and talking to industry professionals, I realized things were actually far worse than depicted in the documentary. It was at that moment that I decided to use my skills and expertise towards improving the fashion industry and Recloseted was born!
Why do you deserve to win the Best Youth Entrepreneur award?
I am determined to make a measurable and positive impact on the fashion industry with my business, Recloseted. To date, we have 8,000+ community members (social media followers and email subscribers), consulted 150+ brands, and spoken at 50+ events to raise awareness about sustainable fashion. We also donate 10% of profits and billable hours back to the slow fashion community. Although COVID-19 deeply impacted the fashion industry from a supply chain perspective and consumers are no longer buying as much clothing, I was able to successfully pivot Recloseted. After listening to feedback from slow fashion founders, I added two new online programs to our services, which allowed us to achieve our highest revenue and profit to date. While I’m happy about that, I’m more proud that I found alternative ways to continue supporting the slow fashion community amidst the pandemic. Thank you in advance for your support as Recloseted works towards our mission of righting the harmful fashion industry!
