Best Community Impact

What motivated you to start your business and what core cause do you support?

I worked as a clinician for two decades, and witnessed first-hand how clients have troubles finding the right care. After ending my employment at the company I was with early 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic started, I took it upon myself to start my own venture in health. I knew where the gap in healthcare was, and wanted to create something that would benefit both health and wellness providers and clients. Connecting with the right services and professionals is crucial in ensuring the right care is provided. I believe that healthcare should be catered to everyone's individual needs. What works for one person might not work for another - healthcare is not one size fits all. There is a huge fragmentation in the wellness industry with no effective strategy for choosing health and wellness solutions. With so many options, clients struggle or spend too much time and effort finding reliable sources that are not necessarily personalized to their needs. On the other hand, health practitioners have a harder time efficiently getting the word out about their services among so much noise. I decided to tackle this issue and create Prompt Health, a two-sided online marketplace helping both clients and health practitioners. As we continue living through a pandemic, there is no better time to find the exact healthcare we are looking for, whether that’s in person or through virtual care options - both of which Prompt Health provides access to.

Why do you deserve to win the Best Community Impact award?

After a turbulent 2020, this is now the year that our health is more important than ever. Prompt Health's mission is to make personalized healthcare easy and accessible for all Canadians. We were able to create, launch, and go to market with a product that will revolutionize the health and wellness industry with smart referrals. The journey to the healthier you should be personalized, as one size does not fit all. With the help of technology, Prompt Health was able to modernize and transform the client’s journey so you no longer have to blindly connect with services. Ensuring everyone has access to healthcare options from their home is important to us. We understand that asking friends and family for referrals, or waiting months on a waitlist for a professional a doctor referred is not ideal. This is a very real issue that I have seen prevail in the Canadian healthcare system and I am proud to be helping eradicate it. On the back end, Prompt Health's team consists largely of business and software engineering students. I believe that Canada's students are the future of innovation, and strategically created a team of bright students to help bring Prompt Health to life. By employing students from local universities, Prompt Health created a company culture of collaboration and innovation where we all share the same goal of wanting to make healthcare more accessible while providing students the opportunity to gain hands on work experience within their field of study. The core of Prompt Health as a business is to help the community access health and wellness options that fit their unique needs. No one deserves to settle for their healthcare, and Prompt Health's network is a tool that helps with that.

Best Immigrant Entrepreneur

Please tell us your personal story and about your business. How you started, and how you have overcome challenges.

Growing up in Iran, it was not very common for women to work. I realized very early that I was blessed to have a mother who went against the norm and managed to have a high managerial role, being a mother to 4 kids. Still, there was a glass ceiling for career opportunities for women. Recognizing this and wanting greater opportunities and better future for us, my family made the decision to leave Iran and move to Canada when I was 17. It was a difficult transition leaving everything behind, but I was excited as I knew Canada was the door to opportunities I could have never even imagined in Iran. I went on to complete my undergraduate degree in Kinesiology, which I chose because of my passion for fitness and competitive swimming background, followed by a Master's degree in Cardiac rehabilitation. I entered the workforce as a clinician, and stayed in that role for 15 years. I learned about all these inefficiencies in the delivery of care that I wanted to solve, but didn't know how. Wanting to take full advantage of the education opportunity I was provided when we moved to Canada, I went back to school and completed my global MBA and spent the last few years providing consultation to a few health technology start-ups before launching my own. I knew both the problem and the solution from first-hand experience. The problem is the huge fragmentation in the wellness industry with no effective strategy for choosing health and wellness solutions. With so many options, clients struggle or spend too much time and effort finding reliable sources that are not necessarily personalized to their needs. On the other hand, health practitioners have a harder time efficiently getting the word out about their services among so much noise. I decided take this in my own hands and created this two-sided online marketplace helping both clients and the health practitioners. Knowing that I was able to overcome the challenges associated to being an immigrant, I hope to inspire the next generation of young women in business who like me saw a problem and sought out to find a solution.

Why do you deserve to win the Best Immigrant Entrepreneur award?

Winning this award would be a symbol of perseverance. I want my story to inspire young girls, like my daughter, to show them that anything is possible with determination and hard work when you put your heart and soul into it. If you have a true passion, do not let anyone or anything get in the way of you using that passion to help others. It was challenging to sit in first year college at the age of 17, speaking a different language. Having to adapt to a brand new lifestyle was a challenge on its own, but overcoming the judgement that comes with being an immigrant was the most difficult part. I had to push aside the judgement and biases and shift focus on my goal of finishing my education. I was able to successfully complete a Master's degree in Science from UBC and an MBA from SFU. I quickly discovered that I always felt energized and excited by learning about the latest and greatest innovations, and set myself on a mission to give back to the community through the power of good health. I took advantage of all opportunities that we have here in Canada and continued my dream to help people at a mass level, which is now enabled with technology. After finishing my education, gathering the knowledge I gained over my years as a clinician, and channeling the same drive that got me through my early years in Canada, I knew it was the best time to use all the experiences to start my own venture. It was also very timely to offer a health service that is enabled by technology. We launched in Oct 2020 and within a few months had hundreds of Health professionals joining our network from all across Canada.
