Best Community Impact

What motivated you to start your business and what core cause do you support?

I am an internationally acclaimed Makeup Artist with over 16 years of experience. My work has been featured in Huffington Post, Cosmo, Daily Mail, just to name a few. I've worked in cosmetics retail management for companies such as MAKE UP FOR EVER, Nars, Shoppers Beauty Boutique. In 2016 I fell in love with Clean, Canadian Made Makeup but noticed these products did not hold up to my pro standards nor was there a Pro, Clean Makeup Line on the Market. I took matters into my own hands, lined up with a Canadian Manufacturer, a Female Chemist who specializes in Clean Makeup and we started formulating MisMacK from the ground up. My core cause is to provide education and help others to seamlessly make the switch to clean beauty while supporting other local businesses. Clean beauty is not just a trend, it's the future. As this industry is self-regulated and has not been updated since 1948, it allows large loopholes for inexpensive, toxic ingredients to be put into everyday products. Example: US has about 30 ingredients banned, 400+ in Canada, EU 1400+. These ingredients can be cancer-causing, hormonal disruptors, and can lead to major health issues down the road. Not only that but the ethics in how ingredients are being produced can be quite heart-wrenching. From animal testing, which we have known about for a while now, but no one is talking about the other shady areas, like how Mica can be mined by Children in India. Also, the environmental impact that these products have on our earth is extremely destructive. MisMacK is providing products that are Canadian Made, Safe, Sustainable, Ethically Sourced, Non-Toxic, Sustainable, Peta Cruelty-Free, Peta Vegan, that perform better than mainstream. We are all about the why factor and passionate about educating without fear-mongering. When you purchase a MisMacK product not only are you making an amazing choice for your body and our environment but you’re supporting a chain of locally owned and operated business which helps fuel our local economy. We're makeup with a purpose. We've partnered up with our local Habitat For Humanity Okanagan to create a very special Moisture Locking Lipstick in honor of and named after our 94 years young Grandma - Patty Mae. $5 from every Patty Mae sold goes to Habitat for Humanity Okanagan. It's the MisMacK Family helping deserving Families build forever homes within my community.

Why do you deserve to win the Best Community Impact award?

What motivated you to start your business, what challenges did you overcome?

I am an internationally acclaimed Makeup Artist with over 16 years of experience. My work has been featured in Huffington Post, Cosmo, Daily Mail, just to name a few. I've worked in cosmetics retail management for companies such as MAKE UP FOR EVER, Nars, Shoppers Beauty Boutique. In 2016 I noticed a huge shift starting to happen within the makeup industry. "Clean Beauty" was on the rise and my blinders of this self-regulated industry were removed and I fell in love with its integrity. However, being a professional makeup artist, "clean/natural/green" makeup products didn't hold up to my professional standards nor were they branded to appeal to high-end clientele/makeup artists/Sephora lovers. After much research, I noticed there was a need for Professional Performing, Highly Pigmented, Ethically Sourced, Canadian Made, Clean Makeup Line. Something like the MAKE UP FOR EVER but for the Clean Beauty World. With my attention to detail and pickiness with how products sit on the skin, I knew could create something magical. I took matters into my own hands, lined up with a Canadian Manufacture, a Female Chemist who specializes in Clean Makeup and we started formulating MisMacK from the ground up. One of my biggest challenges was creating formulas that reads well for TV/Film HD Cameras, photography, lighting, but that also held up to long wear on set, stage/dance performances, event applications while keeping everything in line with Clean Ingredients and ethics. "Clean" is hard as we are limited on what we can use. My Chemist and I worked countless hours on creating and testing formulas that do just that. While I sourced and tested sustainable packaging, which was incredibly challenging. Every product was placed in my pro kit and had to pass my professional test before hitting the market. Being the New Kids on the Block, we are set with the challenge of gaining the trust of the pro world and consumers. Merging the 2 worlds of - "Professional" and "Clean" had never been done before. Professional makeup artists/consumers have had the same experiences with Clean Makeup as I did. I'm so proud to say that we are overcoming this. We have now gained the trust and support of International Makeup Artists such as Dany Sanz - Founder of Make Up For Ever, Melissa Street - 8 Time Emmy Award Winning Makeup Artist, and James Mackinnon - 5 Emmy Award Winning Makeup Artist. We are building incredible clientele loyalty with our products, education, and customer service.

Why do you deserve to win the Best Innovation award?

When it comes to being Innovative there are lots of obstacles and challenges to overcome. I'm doing something that has never been done before. Forcing myself to push through these hurdles, to think outside of the box, to just keep swimming, while seizing all opportunities along the way, has made us resilient. We're merging the worlds of "Professional" and "Clean" by creating Innovative, Sustainable, Award-Winning products that satisfy the demand of professional makeup artists and consumers. By doing so we leaders in this Clean Beauty revolution. MisMacK is making a difference in this world, one eco-friendly glitter at a time. Winning Best Innovation will help us create New Innovative Products that will be available at our first MisMacK Retail/Makeup Education/Distribution storefront downtown Salmon Arm this April. We are so excited to be able to grow roots and offer our MisMacK education, Services, and more Innovative MisMacK products in our new HQ aka Headquarters.

Best Solopreneur

What motivated you to start your business? What challenges did you overcome as a Solopreneur?

I am an internationally acclaimed Makeup Artist with over 16 years of experience. My work has been featured in Huffington Post, Cosmo, Daily Mail, just to name a few. I've worked in cosmetics retail management for companies such as MAKE UP FOR EVER, Nars, Shoppers Beauty Boutique. In 2016 I noticed a huge shift starting to happen within the makeup industry. "Clean Beauty" was on the rise. My blinders of this self-regulated industry were removed and I fell in love with its integrity. However, being a professional makeup artist these "clean/natural/green" products did not hold up to my professional standards nor were they branded to appeal to high-end clientele/makeup artists/Sephora lovers. After my research, I noticed there was a need for Professional Performing, Highly Pigmented, Ethically Sourced, Canadian Made, Clean Makeup. Something like the MAKE UP FOR EVER but for the Clean Beauty World. With constant attention to detail and how high-performance products sit on the skin, I knew I could create something magical. I took matters into my own hands, lined up with a Female, Canadian manufacture and Chemist who specializes in Clean Makeup and we started formulating MisMacK from the ground up. I have never gone to school for business or entrepreneurship, nor have I ever met someone that has built a successful cosmetics company before. I learned it all on my own. From branding design to packaging sourcing, designing our custom ART Shadow tins, testing formulations, testing packaging, down to barcodes, and stickers, have all been done by me in my basement of small-town Canoe. Needless to say Google and I become best friends. Being a solely-owned indie brand comes with its challenges as the cosmetics industry is quite a competitive one. You know the saying “If you build it they will come”? Ya – That’s a hard no, once you figure out how to build it you then have to figure out ways to market it, to sell it, ship it, and get people loving it. A solopreneur means you are also COE - Cheif of Everything. You are the front and the backend of everything. I've had to continue learning new skills, think outside of the box, get creative with my resources and do something that no one else is doing in order to elevate MisMacK.

Why do you deserve to win the Best Solopreneur award?

I'm the first Female, Canadian, Solopreneur to build the first-ever Professional Performing Clean Makeup Brand. I saw the need for industry-shaking products/brand before "Clean" went mainstream and I took action. I've built my business from the ground up in my basement of small-town Canoe. A small-town girl with Global Dreams who's not backed by a major corporate investor or marketing firm. I've solely funded and built MisMacK. I'm a one-woman show in the background and foreground creating products and a brand like nothing else on the market. Yes, others will follow but we will always remain the first, a true leader in this Clean Beauty Revolution. As a Female COE (Chief Officer of Everything) of my business and solopreneur, I've had to overcome many hurdles, remained resilient, juggle multiple priorities, constantly evolve and figure out every aspect along the way as I grow MisMacK into a household name brand. My determination, resilience, hard work and focus as gained international attention by Multiple Outlets - The Clean Beauty Awards, Named Top 10 Best Female Leader of 2020 by Industry Era (New York Publication), Top 100 Canada Female Entrepreneur for the total Mom Pitch, and Top 3 finalist in the Canadian Export Challenge for BC. I'm pushing through small-town barriers and becoming a pioneer in the Clean Beauty Industry. MisMacK is at a pivoting point as we are gaining Global attention. Winning Soloepreneur would elevate MisMacK's business to the next level and will help me open up our first MisMacK Retail/Makeup Education/Distribution storefront downtown Salmon Arm this April. We are so excited to be able to grow roots and offer our MisMacK education, Services, and more exclusive MisMacK products in our new HQ aka Headquarters., build my team, meet our growing demand.

I took matters into my own hands, lined up with a Female, Canadian manufacture and Chemist who specializes in Clean Makeup and we started formulating MisMacK from the ground up at the age of 32. My goal with MisMacK from the very beginning was to build a successful, global brand. My first in-person meeting with my Manufacture/Chemist I said "I want to me like the Make Up For Ever of the Clean Beauty World". Providing amazing Professional Performing, Clean Products as well as educating the next generation of Makeup Artists. The Founder of Make Up For Ever, Dany Sanz built her Global brand by doing just that. I'm determined to do the same while supporting the underdogs of the retail industry. Staying to true our MisMacK's core values, staying resilient, and seizing every opportunity we will get there. Because of staying true to these values MisMacK has the full support of Dany Sanz herself.
