What motivated you to start your business, what challenges did you overcome?

What motivated me to start my business?? I often giggle when I get asked this question because their is so much behind this story. Let me introduce myself, my name is Jennifer Olychick and I am 34 years old. I have a lovely 12 year old daughter and currently married. When I was the tender age of 20, my ex-partner and I decided to merge our talents to start a line painting company. This was back in 2008, time flies! It was hard work, but the company was doing very well there for a couple of years. Fast forward to 2010, after having had to endure a lot of mental and physical abuse from my partner in both the work and personal world, I finally decided it was time to leave and better my life. After a bitter battle in business in court, I eventually left with a lot less then what I should have been paid for my part in the company, a whole pile of debt from the old business that was never paid to me, and to top it off, a non-compete clause for 2 years! This was a challenging time for me, at the age of 23 years old with a 2 year old baby. I left the company, accepted the non compete and thought I would never look back. To support myself, I started an online jewelry/artisan business so I could stay home and care for my daughter. After my non-compete clause was over I decided to start Manta Parking Maintenance and we have been going strong ever since! This has definitely not been without challenges lol. A thick skin is required to be a younger female in this type of industry. Some notable, ongoing challenges usually include the fact that I am a tiny, 5FT tall woman and that sometimes, people can't quite take me seriously. To counter this, I usually just state my title as Sales + Operations, this makes things run a bit smoother although the fact that I have to go this route is quite unfair. I've had sexual harassment from multiple clients, one of them even threatened not to pay if I wasn't going to meet them personally (after expressing I was not comfortable doing so!) Luckily, I am well versed in small claims court and was able to collect my money. Some other challenges have been finding great employees! We are very fortunate to have long term, loyal staff with us now. Staring and operating a business is a ton of work and can be mentally and physically exhausting but I wouldn't have it any other way. When I am able to give my customers excellent service it makes all the time and effort worth it! Thanks for reading my story! xo Jenninfer Olychick

Why do you deserve to win the Best Innovation award?

Why do I deserve to win? I deserve to win so that I can share my story and inspire people, young and old, formally educated or not, single parents or married, big or small, that against all odds, you can still become successful and self-made! (and in a completely un-standard industry to boot!) Perseverance, a relentless move forward attitude, my inability to accept the answer "no", the countless tears involved and moments of wanting to give up, the moments of pure bliss when you achieve something your heart so desired it makes you want to fly. My desire to win is not a selfish one, inspiring hope is what I want to achieve! Believe in yourself or no-one else will!
