Best Community Impact

What motivated you to start your business and what core cause do you support?

After working in the recycling and sustainability industries for several years, I was frustrated by systems that seemed to create more problems than they solved. I knew I wanted to start my own business in food, and I wanted that business to have a direct impact on the sustainability of my community. So many of solutions to climate change seem so big and abstract for the average person, so I wanted to offer a small solution that we all can take part in and feel good about. I wanted to give my customers the opportunity to shop for their weekly groceries with as many package-free options as possible. This allows them to reduce their own household waste, therefor reducing the burden on our overextended recycling and landfill waste facilities. Shopping package-free also has a direct connection to shopping locally. By buying from our neighbours we are able to cut down on, or eliminate completely, the packaging needed to transport goods. We also greatly reduce the emissions created in this process. The long term goal of Goodacre Market is to create a thriving and sustainable local food economy that does not burden our beautiful Sunshine Coast with waste.

Why do you deserve to win the Best Community Impact award?

The core values that drive Goodacre Market are based in community and sustainability. By continuing to expand our package-free options we hope that more customers will start to adjust their shopping habits and cut out more single-use plastics from other areas of their life as well. We also will continue to buy from our neighbours to help contribute to a strong local food economy. We want to keep promoting the amazing goods produced on the Sunshine Coast and help to expand the quantity and variety of goods available. The Sunshine Coast is made unique and special because of the extremely high number of small businesses that are grateful to call this beautiful place home. With such diversity in these businesses we have a thriving local economy. There were so many supports that I was able to utilize to help get Goodacre Market established and I look forward to being able to give back to this incredible community what it has already given to me. Businesses can be a powerful tool for good when they are led with social purpose and values and our first year has proven that a mandate for local and sustainable can bring positive benefits to the community as a whole. Circulating wealth locally and lifting up the businesses around us through mutually beneficial partnerships will allow the Sunshine Coast to continue to grow and thrive.

Why do you deserve to win the Best Youth Entrepreneur award?

I think that really every entrepreneur deserves an award at some point in their life for showing the creativity, courage, perseverance and strength that it takes to create something from nothing and keep at it. Launching Goodacre Market has been an incredibly humbling, exciting and challenging experience - even before a global pandemic was thrown into the mix! But I am most proud of staying true to my values, building meaningful partnership with so many local businesses, growing a loyal and diverse customer base, and still finding time to have balance and fun in my life. Making the move to the Sunshine Coast has been the best decision and it was a scary experience to move and start a business all within the same year, but it has made it the most rewarding decision of my life.

Premier's People's Choice

Goodacre Market is a values driven business that aims to serve the Sunshine Coast in a positive and sustainable way. Our mission to provide package-free and local grocery shopping options helps each of our customers create more sustainable habits in their homes and everyday lives. We hope that by generating some habit change it will push the community to start seeking out these types of products in other aspects of their lives as well. We place a high priority on choosing suppliers who are locally based on the Sunshine Coast and produce their products sustainably and ethically. There is already such a strong food economy on the Coast, and we want to lend to that by being a reliable outlet for these producers to sell their goods to. We hope that this will encourage more producers to come forward and contribute to the local food economy. For Goodacre Market, impact isn't just about checking one box for sustainability (ie. no packaging) - it's about finding as many ways possible to build a thriving, healthy and resilient local economy and environment.
