Why do you deserve to win the Best Community Impact award?

We are the 1st dental office in British Columbia going zero waste! Rethinking how we do everything. Our clinic was founded on the principle that a business can be used as a force for good, currently B Corp pending. We saw a problem with the disposal of single-use dental plastics that end up in the landfill. We decided we could change that! We measure our impact at the end of each day and the information is shared on our website. In less than a year, we have diverted a total of 8716 plastic single-use dental items. Another great accomplishment includes the use of the world's first biodegradable gloves for all procedures. In addition to our metrics, we also share the sources for our eco-friendly swaps so that other colleagues may follow suit. We inspire our patients to consider more sustainable options in their personal and professional lives. “We don’t need a handful of people doing zero-waste perfectly, we need millions of people doing it imperfectly.”

Best Innovation

What motivated you to start your business, what challenges did you overcome?

Innovation is the only sustainable competitive advantage a company can have. We are a family of dentists practicing across the Fraser Valley for the past 7 years. We have combined our experiences to create an innovative, high-tech, eco-conscious dental office. We inspire on two different levels: a new patient experience loaded with tech complemented by our positive environmental impact. The first challenge we overcame was creating an atmosphere where patients and team members enjoy being there. We tend to the 5 senses: sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste. Our new patients are welcomed by a nature wall, setting the stage for our zero-waste mission. The tour of the office takes them through themed rooms with floor-to-ceiling murals with blended essential oils to match the scenery. The familiar sounds they hear is their favorite music playing in the background. Upon seating, they feel the comfort of the massage dental chair. Next, we follow the tour into their mouth using high definition dental photography to co-diagnose each individual’s treatment plan. This is an alternative to the traditional doctor-patient relationship. The second challenge was starting a zero-waste dental office from scratch. It took over 2 years of research and development, and currently ongoing. The most significant ideas involved substituting every single-use plastic for their most sustainable counterpart. For example, our team uses the world’s first biodegradable gloves and our patients receive a zero-waste oral hygiene kit with bamboo toothbrush and other eco-friendly dental products. Not only is our landfill contribution minimized, our systems and processes resulted in higher efficiency. To get a glimpse we invite you to take a 3D tour on our website and a virtual guest in our dental home!

Why do you deserve to win the Best Innovation award?

We would be honored to win this award as it would highlight the unfamiliar eco-conscious shift in the comprehensive delivery of dental care. With the mission to be the first zero-waste dental office in British Columbia and Canada’s first B Corp dental office, we hope to inspire not only fellow colleagues, but also any individual or business to use their platform to shift the narrative. Every voice makes a difference. Taking care of the environment by limiting waste is just one of the many ways this can be done. At the same time, taking care of our patients’ health and motivating them to have more eco-conscious habits benefits everyone in the community and the greater planet. Some people say it costs too much to be environmentally friendly. It costs too much not to be! To complement zero-waste, we use high definition dental photography which does not require any printing of materials, rather presenting on screen or via email. This allows us to co-diagnose each individual’s treatment plan and is an alternative to the traditional doctor-patient relationship.
