Best Solopreneur

What motivated you to start your business? What challenges did you overcome as a Solopreneur?

Since I began training martial arts three years ago, there has been an influx of women into the space. In response to this, gyms have created women’s only classes, and women’s self defense seminars, but the one thing that has really lagged behind has been women’s representation in activewear. Every single woman that I have spoken to who trains Jiu Jitsu is wearing either men’s gear to train, or child’s extra large. What's available for women right now is ill-fitting, poorly designed, and stereotypically feminine. This presents a clear barrier - if you can’t access clothing designed specifically for your body, you're not going to feel as welcome in a space. I created Bombshell Boxing because women in martial arts needed a brand just for them. It took twenty years for the first women's fight to happen in the UFC, and martial arts are still a generally new space for women. I want Bombshell Boxing to become the go-to brand for women in martial arts globally. Bombshell Boxing will offer the highest quality, best fitting activewear on the market for women in a number of different martial arts. By offering activewear designed specifically for women, Bombshell Boxing will drive more women into the sport, fostering community, advancement, and a sense of belonging. As a Solopreneur with a non-business background, I've had to learn everything as I go. I began working on Bombshell Boxing on March 1st, 2020, right before COVID-19 shut everything down in Canada. I'm also finishing up my final semester of a degree in International Relations at UBC, so I've had to balance full-time studies while launching my business. When I first began working on Bombshell Boxing, I wanted to create a business that I would feel proud to buy from. Because of this, all of our clothing is made in Langley, BC, everything is shipped using recycled and compostable materials, and you can plant our clothing tags and they'll grow wildflowers. Building everything myself has been challenging, but oh so rewarding, as I've been able to create a brand that really listens to what women want, creates clothing I'm proud to put my name behind, and continues to innovate within the space.

Why do you deserve to win the Best Solopreneur award?

I've built Bombshell Boxing from just a small idea, borne of frustration in a still-male dominated space, into a thriving business. I am finishing up my final semester of a BA in International Relations at UBC, so I've been juggling full-time schoolwork and launching Bombshell Boxing. As a solo founder with a non-business background, Bombshell Boxing has given me a crash course in brand development, sales, copywriting, production, website building, and social media management. Being awarded the Best Solopreneur award would mean so much, providing community support, the opportunity to continue to grow the brand, and an amazing cohort of fellow-BC businesses to be a part of. I have created a Canadian brand through and through, with everything being manufactured and designed here, and I intend to keep it that way. I want Bombshell Boxing to be a Canadian success story, a British Columbian success story more specifically, and I want it to be a brand that we're all proud to take ownership of. Winning the Best Solopreneur award would help kickstart Bombshell Boxing to the forefront of the British Columbia ecosystem, and would allow me to reach even more women in martial arts across Canada and beyond, helping them feel supported and listened to.
