Best Community Impact

What motivated you to start your business and what core cause do you support?

Arbutus Medical was founded in 2014 through a collaboration between a group of biomedical engineers from the University of British Columbia’s Engineers in Scrubs program, and surgeons from the Uganda Sustainable Trauma Orthopaedic Program (Vancouver, Canada) and Mulago National Referral Hospital (Kampala, Uganda). The team’s goal was to develop a radically affordable surgical drill that would ensure that orthopaedic surgeons at Mulago always have access to safe power tools. This collaboration resulted in the development of Arbutus Medical’s first innovation, the DrillCover Technology, a reusable liquid and pathogen proof sterile enclosure that envelopes a non-sterile tool and fully seals the power transmission through the sterile barrier. Through expert medical engineering and creative innovation, Arbutus Medical has grown, and to date have designed and commercialized a portfolio of medical devices that can improve care for millions of patients worldwide. The company has shipped products capable of safely treating more than 60,000 human patients and 38,000 animal patients across more than 36 countries. The current line of orthopedic power tools is embraced by the veterinary, military, global health, and trauma centre markets. We still remain motivated by the fact that 5 billion people don't have access to safe surgery and believe that by simplifying orthopaedic technology we can help change that. We're aiming to enable 5 million surgeries by 2030.

Why do you deserve to win the Best Community Impact award?

Our company was created to help people get access to safe surgery, and to help control the costs of sterile surgical tools. We have proven that we can innovate while keeping an eye on costs, that we can meet a need not just in global health, but in other areas as well, including military, veterinary and major trauma hospital settings as well. We have expanded our workforce in the past two years to meet the growing demand for our products, and continue to innovate despite the challenges of the pandemic. We have a caring workplace, where our staff’s satisfaction is as important as their mental health. And finally, we measure our success not just in products sold, but in the numbers of lives improved, both at home and around the world.
