Introducing Your 2019 Best Concept Award Top 10 Semi-Finalists

The Best Concept Award salutes new exciting, creative and innovative businesses (and business ideas) in British Columbia. This is our only award that doesn’t require entrepreneurs to be in business yet; they just need to demonstrate their awesome, viable idea that’s going to make a huge impact. The award is judged on the following criteria:

  • Viable, Creative Concept: This business concept describes the business, its product, the market it serves, and the business’ competitive advantage.
  • Strategy for Growth: The plan that will take the business beyond merely a concept or start-up to the next level with a strong implementation/growth strategy.

On a mission to change construction industry wastefulness by providing affordable and environmentally-conscious alternatives, Sea to Sky Removal (pictured above) clinched the award in 2018. Who will take the honours in 2019? Here are your Top 10 Semi-Finalists for the Best Concept Award:

Kootenay Canine Adventures, Cranbrook

Kootenay Canine Adventures caters to all breeds and behavior types. They understand that not all dogs have the same needs and they offer a variety of services to suit, including 10-pack walks that take place each week.

Raven Reads Books Ltd. Kamloops

The Jump Life, North Vancouver

Based in beautiful North Vancouver, JUMP uplifts people who want to overcome their perceived limits with exercise through movement and mindfulness, so they can experience a greater joy and performance in their lives.

Barnacle Systems Inc, Victoria

Barnacle Systems aim to help people who experience “boater’s anxiety” with their product that monitors the health of their boat whether they’re at the dock, at home, or half way around the world. If you’re familiar with the concept of a “smart home”, Barnacle Systems’ product works in much the same way, except on the water.

Mr. Quinley’s Weird, Wonderful and (Sometimes) Slightly Odd Adventures, Surrey

A unique concept that fires the imagination, Mr. Quinley’s Weird, Wonderful and (Sometimes) Slightly Odd Adventures invites children of all ages to join the protagonist on his adventures through letters delivered to your home every two weeks.

Locelle Digital Inc. North Saanich

Locelle, a networking platform for professional women, was founded by Humaira Ahmed, after she had her second child. She was increasingly feeling socially isolated and depressed and needed an easier way to connect with like-minded women who lived close by.

susGRAINable, Vancouver

It all began when five MBA students and two biochemistry scientists came together for an entrepreneurship class at UBC. Two problems were identified by the group of seven: one, an overabundance of spent grain mash due to the recent rise of the micro-brewing industry; the second, a growing health concern with the North American diet. Out of the intersection of these two problems, came one solution. A low sugar, high protein & high fibre flour is the result of numerous hours of grueling product research.

Motus Health & Wellness, Vancouver

Motus Health and Wellness’ goal is to provide accessible, convenient customized health care while maximizing the time, energy, health & freedom of their clients. Hearing what the busy people of Vancouver want is what set this dream in motion and ultimately led to the creation of their solar powered Motus Mobile Clinic.

Haywood Golf, Vancouver

Haywood Golf was created to design a wedge that looked and felt like a two-hundred dollar club without the two-hundred dollar price tag. After sourcing manufacturers and a meticulous testing process on the range and on the course, creator Josh Haywood discovered a wedge that was solid on approach shots and soft around the greens.

Campertunity, Vancouver

On a camping trip two years ago, Campertunity’s founders camped in a park and woke to the sound of cars driving by and people talking all around them. From this crowded and loud experience, the idea of Campertunity was born. With Campertunity, campers can book on private land, avoid expensive re-sales of campsites, and easily book a camping vacation.
