Cashing in on Energy Savings

We’re all guilty of it. A new piece of technology comes out and we want it, we need it, we will make time to find out how to get it. It’s exciting. But a new boiler? A new lighting system? A new refrigerator? They’re not going to get you dancing in the streets. Or are they?

It might not be as fun or sexy, but by installing a new boiler that helps keep your workplace warmer and reduces your bills, you’ll be dancing all the way to the bank.

Nelson’s Hume Hotel, took advantage of a bad situation in 2010, when the fire of the neighbouring building flooded the hotel. During renovations they replaced their central water heater with a high-efficiency model and received a $4,500 rebate from FortisBC. They have also seen a reduction in their natural gas consumption, despite the amount of water they are using has increased.

The Happy Vineyards, near Oliver, BC changed their irrigation system from a large pump and sprinkler system to drip irrigation. This has cut their power consumption in half, saving him $1,200 per year.

Weyerhaeuser Sawmill in Princeton, in western Okanagan, changed their lighting to LED, added timers to production equipment and replaced motors, pumps and compressors to make their equipment more efficient. These replacements saved them over 2.4 million kilowatt hours of electricity, just over 10 percent of their consumption.
