Client Story

Meet Chris Davies, Chris’s Sign & Lighting Service Inc.

Chris’s Sign & Lighting Service Inc. has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a one-man sign and lighting maintenance service in Langley. In business for over 20 years, Chris’s Signs now employs over 30 people, and has recently expanded to include a partner location in Alberta.

An Early Start, With Help from His Family

For Chris Davies, owning a business is about shaping his future on his own terms. He had the itch to become an entrepreneur at a young age – at 14 he started selling model car products through the mail, and did yard work with a friend to make extra money.

A few years later, he was inspired to get into sign and lightening maintenance by his father and grandfather, who were also in the industry. After acquiring his first bucket truck, and with a little advice from his family, Chris’s Signs was born. To this day, Chris’ father remains a big part of his life and his grandfather’s influence and guidance is still felt in his business.

A People Person

Growing a successful business from a single person to over 30 doesn’t happen by accident, and Chris attributes his success, in part, to his management skills. “I believe my greatest strength is my ability to manage people, and bring out their strengths,” says Chris. He also applies that same attentiveness to his customers. “You encounter so many different personalities in customers and employees, and each person needs to be cared for individually.”

At Chris’s Signs, it’s the little things that make a difference for staff. From celebrating every employee’s birthday and supporting employee education and training, to team-building excursions and staff barbeques – his team knows they’re appreciated. In fact it’s not uncommon for Chris’s staff to be approached on the street by people who want to know how to apply to be part of the team.

Taking care of his employees creates an atmosphere where his staff members want to go the extra mile to take care of his customers. Chris makes sure his team is empowered to make decisions that help keep customers happy. “I believe the biggest reason we are successful is because of our employees’ dedication and attention to detail, and the great customer service we provide to our customers,” says Chris. The net effect? His employees feel like they have much more than just a job. They’re part of one big family.

Hard Work Recognized

Chris’s Signs was recently named Best Employer at the 10th Annual Successful You Awards – and very much in the spirit of the award, he had his entire team there with him to accept the honour. “It has been very inspirational to all our staff, and was a very proud moment for the company as a whole,” says Chris. “We have also had the privilege of being recognized by various media outlets as a result of the award, which has also been a great honour.”

Just prior to his Successful You Awards win, Chris was also named one of Business in Vancouver’s Forty Under 40 in 2012.

One Last Piece of Advice?

When asked what advice he would give new entrepreneurs, Chris’ response was simple: “To work hard, and be passionate, dedicated and enthusiastic about what you do. Don’t be lazy.” He also emphasizes the importance of goal-setting to help grow your business. “Look forward at your future goals and keep them clear in your mind,” says Chris. “When you reach those goals, set new ones. Always strive for the next one.”
